Our ELA Program

Cheyenne Mountain School District typically serves over 39 languages district-wide. English Language Learners (ELLs) in our district are students who have a home language other than English and would benefit academically from services that specifically address English language development.  These students may have spoken English since birth or they may be new to the English language.  They qualify as language learners due to differences in their language learning, or due to differences in their home language environment.

Cheyenne Mountain School District is committed to providing services for the individual talents, gifts, abilities, and challenges of its English Language Learners. We are committed to providing a learning environment which maximizes the intellectual development of each student.  We believe that English Language Learners:

  1. have the potential for outstanding performance
  2. have specific and significant needs
  3. require appropriate programming options
  4. benefit from a partnership shared by the school, the community, and the parents

Goals

The goals of the program include:

  1. meeting the needs of individual students
  2. providing students with critical thinking skills and English language development
  3. assisting students to become self-directed learners and capable problem solvers
  4. providing services specifically designed for each learner
  5. assisting students to develop a solid awareness of their own talents, building a strong self-concept, and appreciating the value of these to self and to others
  6. using and developing home language and home culture
  7. increasing awareness of diversity and American culture
